Author abstract
The effect of intermittent normobaric hypoxic therapy on intellectual functioning in essential hypertension was studied. Twenty outpatients, six men and 14 women, had hypertension for 13.55±2.1 years. Ten received pathogenetic therapy alone; ten additionally underwent hypoxic therapy using portable Vershina hypoxicators. The six-week course comprised six five-minute breathing cycles daily. Intellectual functioning was assessed before and after the study. Patients receiving hypoxic therapy showed improved cognitive measures: greater long-term auditory memory, immediate auditory-verbal memory, visual memory and spatial memory. Cognitive impairment in hypertension is a serious medical problem. Adding hypoxic therapy to pathogenetic hypertension treatment improves well-being and quality of life.
The authors therefore consider the method appropriate for hypertension prevention and treatment.
