IHHT and overtraining were examined in a pilot study of fifteen track-and-field athletes. The researchers assessed wellbeing, heart-rate variability and physical capacity after a course combined with lighter training.

IHHT and overtraining: study design

Participants were aged 18–21 and had verified overtraining. They completed fourteen procedures of 45 minutes while reducing training demands. This setting concerns recovery of initially impaired capacity, not the promise of additional gains in otherwise healthy elite athletes.

Reported findings

The authors report changes in performance capacity, tolerance of hypoxia, ECG and several autonomic-regulation indicators. These observations suggest questions for recovery research, but they do not isolate the procedure from reduced workload and other time-related influences. A full control intervention was lacking.

IHHT and overtraining: practical interpretation

Overall, the study is preliminary, and the authors recommend controlled comparisons of IHHT and traditional hypoxic training. Its session schedule is a research description rather than a self-directed sports prescription. Further work should separate recovery from performance enhancement and measure outcomes relevant to training availability and competition.
