IHT in finswimmers was evaluated in an experiment with six athletes. Three participants formed the control group and three received intermittent hypoxic training in addition to their usual preparation, with repeated-swim performance assessed.

The comparison for IHT in finswimmers

Both groups prepared for the same competitive period and completed the ordinary training programme. The experimental group also received hypoxic sessions. This structure provides a comparison, but three athletes per group leave substantial room for individual differences and unstable estimates.

The performance assessment

The investigators used a series of four swims over one hundred metres. They also examined indicators of training load. A repeated-swim task can reflect the ability to sustain effort across intervals, although it is not identical to a championship result or a long-term performance trajectory.

What the authors reported

The experimental group showed favourable changes according to the publication. However, the tiny sample does not support a reliable estimate for a wider population. The actual intervention was IHT, not IHHT, and the study did not test an OXYTERRA device.

Connections with other reports

The authors also published related work in underwater sport. Some programmes or participants may overlap, so separate papers should not automatically be treated as independent replications. In addition, a discrepancy in issue information is retained in the source record rather than resolved by assumption.

Practical interpretation

Overall, the study offers a preliminary sport-specific comparison and a clear example of a repeat-effort test. It helps identify outcomes for future research, but it does not establish an optimal regimen. Larger studies should account for training load, baseline performance and recovery when assessing additional hypoxic exposure.

Context and further reading

The following links explain current equipment, the oxygen-phase structure of IHHT and supervised applications. They should be read alongside the original training protocol, not as a claim that all forms of hypoxic preparation are equivalent.
