IHT and IHHT after COVID-19 were compared in 72 children aged 9–12, including 24 with asthma. Both groups received an active oxygen-conditioning programme. The study therefore examines differences between two interventions, not either intervention against no treatment.
Groups and course
The IHT group included 31 children and the IHHT group 41. Each course comprised ten procedures, with individual hypoxic tolerance assessed before exposure. The researchers used BIO-NOVA and ReOxy, not OXYTERRA RS. The findings belong to the studied equipment, protocols and paediatric population.
IHT and IHHT after COVID-19: findings
The authors report improved hypoxic tolerance in both groups. Certain respiratory measurements, tolerability and anxiety-related findings favoured IHHT. These outcomes provide a comparison within the study, but they do not establish the same advantage for every child, symptom pattern or post-COVID rehabilitation programme.
Understanding the active comparison
Because both groups received active intervention, improvement in both does not establish the additional benefit over recovery without these procedures. Other care, natural recovery and initial differences need consideration. It is also important to separate the asthma subgroup from the entire 72-child sample.
Clinical interpretation
The authors describe a favourable response and regard the programmes as useful within rehabilitation. However, a defined short study cannot establish universal paediatric safety or long-term effectiveness. Its respiratory and tolerance outcomes are not proof of preventing later complications, and the article is not a self-treatment guide.
Conclusion
The study contributes a direct comparison of hypoxia–normoxia and hypoxia–hyperoxia in a specific paediatric recovery setting. Selected outcomes favour IHHT, while the absence of an untreated comparison limits broader causal claims. The original publication provides the complete measurements, eligibility information and group analyses.
Context and further reading
Technology explains the distinction between IHT and IHHT, and applications gives the wider supervised rehabilitation context. The OXYTERRA RS product page describes different equipment from that used in this trial.
