Normobaric hypoxic therapy in cardiovascular care: a review

Профилактическая медицина · 2026 · 29(5):27–31

Normobaric hypoxic therapy is reviewed as a complementary approach in cardiovascular care. The authors examine literature on hypertension and coronary heart disease, connecting reported clinical responses with adaptation mechanisms. The publication uses narrative synthesis rather than a meta-analysis or a newly recruited patient cohort.

Scope and search period

The literature search covered January 2010 to May 2025. The article discusses reduced-oxygen exposure at normal atmospheric pressure and how different studies select and monitor that exposure. Its 2026 publication date does not mean that every conclusion reflects a new controlled clinical experiment.

Normobaric hypoxic therapy: physiological rationale

The review considers oxygen sensing, circulatory adaptation and metabolic responses. These processes offer a rationale for studying measured hypoxic stimuli. However, mechanistic plausibility and a favourable laboratory change answer different questions from a demonstrated reduction in cardiovascular complications or a sustained clinical benefit.

Clinical directions discussed

Hypertension and coronary heart disease are central topics. The authors examine treatment combinations, tolerability and the choice of relevant outcomes. Standard cardiovascular care remains the background against which an additional intervention must be assessed; the review does not establish a reason to stop prescribed medication.

Why standardisation matters

The reviewed protocols vary in oxygen level, exposure duration, recovery periods and course length. Patient selection, contraindications and monitoring also matter. Without consistent descriptions and suitable comparison groups, differences between studies cannot confidently be interpreted as differences in the effectiveness of a particular regimen.

Conclusion

The article supports further study of normobaric hypoxia within defined cardiovascular programmes. Evidence on mortality, myocardial infarction, stroke and long-term effectiveness remains insufficient. Larger multicentre studies are therefore important. The original publication provides the detailed study descriptions and the authors' discussion of unresolved protocol questions.

Our technology page explains controlled oxygen alternation, and applications outlines supervised programme contexts. Product information concerns OXYTERRA RS specifications; this review is not a device-specific efficacy trial.
