Author abstract
The therapeutic and preventive effectiveness of adaptation to intermittent normobaric hypoxia (INH), produced by breathing a 10% oxygen mixture, was studied in bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive bronchitis. Of 228 patients, 45 received combined conventional treatment and INH, 50 medication alone and 133 INH alone. Courses comprised 10–30 sessions. INH improved clinical condition in chronic obstructive lung disease. Comparison showed significantly greater effectiveness of medication plus INH than either medication or INH alone. INH allowed lower inhaled-drug and oral glucocorticoid doses in patients with bronchial obstruction. Pulmonary-function testing showed improved ventilation through reduced obstruction and increased vital capacity.
