Author abstract
Analysis of several studies led to the conclusion that intermittent normobaric hypoxia (INH) has considerable promise for clinical practice in cardiovascular disease. Adaptation to hypoxia affects the principal pathogenetic mechanisms: prolonged hypoxic exposure reduces sympathoadrenal reactivity, normalises water–salt regulation and improves microcirculation. An INH adaptation course has been shown to normalise blood pressure, exert a pronounced antianginal effect, increase exercise tolerance, lower lipids and reduce peroxidation activity. Hypoxic therapy is used successfully in stage I–III hypertension, neurocirculatory dystonia and various forms of coronary heart disease, including functional class I–IV exertional angina, and in combined rehabilitation after myocardial infarction.
INH is also used for preoperative preparation of cardiac-surgery patients with congenital or acquired heart defects and before coronary artery bypass surgery.
