IHHT after myocardial infarction was studied as an addition to standard rehabilitation in 102 older patients with heart failure. The authors assessed anxiety, perceived quality of life and walking performance. The study concerns adjunctive rehabilitation, not replacement of medication or established cardiac care.

Comparison and participants

Two groups of 51 patients received standard rehabilitation, with IHHT added in one group. The study used ReOxy, not OXYTERRA RS. The intervention course lasted two weeks. The comparison group did not receive sham sessions, which matters particularly when interpreting subjective outcomes.

IHHT after myocardial infarction: main results

The median reduction in HADS anxiety score was 2.0 versus 1.0 points (p = 0.040). The increase in visual quality-of-life assessment was 20.0 versus 15.0 (p = 0.044). Six-minute walking distance increased by 51.0 versus 30.0 metres (p = 0.001). These comparisons favoured the added-IHHT programme.

Different outcomes answer different questions

Walking distance describes functional capacity, while HADS and the visual scale capture psychological and perceived-health responses. Neither type of measurement establishes reduced mortality or fewer recurrent cardiovascular events. The source also uses differing descriptions of quality-of-life changes in its abstract and table, so those labels should not be silently reconciled.

Context for rehabilitation decisions

Both groups received a broader rehabilitation programme. The findings therefore address an additional component within that setting. Short follow-up and absence of sham exposure limit interpretation of durability and subjective responses. The results should not be presented as a guarantee for every older patient after infarction.

Conclusion

The study reports favourable short-term changes in anxiety, perceived quality of life and walking with adjunctive IHHT. It supports further investigation within cardiac rehabilitation. The original publication provides the eligibility criteria, endpoint definitions and full analysis needed to judge how closely a particular patient or programme resembles the study.

Context and further reading

Applications outlines supervised cardiac recovery contexts, while technology explains IHHT. Product information about OXYTERRA RS remains separate from this trial, which used different equipment.
